Prof. Ludlow Lawson Douglas, OJ, MD, FRCSC, FRCS (ed.)
– Jamaican Pioneer of Kidney Transplantation in the Caribbean

Professor Ludlow Lawson Douglas, OJ, MD, FRCSC, FRCS may be best described as the forerunner of urology in Jamaica and the English-speaking Caribbean. As a Consultant Urologist, he has distinguished himself internationally in the field of Urology, having performed the first kidney transplant in Jamaica and the Caribbean at the Kingston Public Hospital (KPH) in September 1970. He established the first dedicated urology service in Jamaica at KPH, and commenced the local training of urologists at The University of the West Indies (UWI) in the 1990s.
Born in Clarendon, Jamaica in 1934, he attended the Wolmer’s Boys School , Kingston College, and UWI , where he represented his schools in football, cricket, track and tennis. Having completed his surgical fellowship in Jamaica, he went on to become a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) in Edinburgh, Scotland, and the went on to complete a fellowship in Urology in Ottawa, Canada.
His dedicated service to Jamaica has been recognized by having been accorded the Order of Jamaica, the Gold Musgrave Medal, as well as having been inducted into the Kingston College Hall of Fame.
